At nine years of age, Josh has had more than his fair share of challenges.
A twin, Josh was born prematurely and fought through the first years of his life to overcome epilepsy, severe global developmental delay with intellectual disability, mild cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate, moderate hearing loss, and a gastrostomy button (he is completely tube fed).
Josh is also legally blind and cannot see clearly beyond a metre, although he can see objects within close range.
“Josh is such a happy, good natured boy and has overcome so much in his short life,” said Neeva.
“Our routine includes physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy support as well as countless specialist and medical appointments, but Josh puts up with it all.”
“We’re so proud of him and his brother Jake… like many twins they shake a share a special bond and spend hours playing together.”
Use of the family computer was aiding in Josh’s education, but his vision impairment and with poor motor skills made controlling the mouse very difficult.
“Josh loves watching animated graphics on the computer, but he cannot control what is happening on it as he is cognitively unable to link the on screen cursor and the mouse,” Neeva explains.
That’s where Variety stepped in, granting Josh his very own touch screen computer system, allowing him to use a computer independently without the difficulty of moving a mouse.
Watching Josh play with his new touch screen, squealing with delight at his favourite Teletubbies program, you see an active, happy and playful boy full of energy and mischief.
“Josh's progress and enjoyment in learning is greatly enhanced, and we've already seen increases in his speech, listening skills, self esteem and independence," said Neeva.
“We are so grateful to Variety and I just wish that all the supporters could see for themselves what a difference they have made to our family. All we can say is ‘thank you’”.
