There are many ways in which you can fundraise, from holding functions such as Quiz nights or movie nights to sponsorship of your car and the Variety regular giving program. Below are a few tips to get you started.
Fundraising ideas
There are endless ways in which you can fundraise for your car. Please be mindful that it is not an easy task and should be started as soon as possible. Below is a list of ideas to consider.
- Sausage sizzles
- Gala dinners
- Golf Days
- Auctions
- Quiz nights
- Community fundraising events (such as City Bay Fun-Run)
- School/workplace casual or theme days
- Film previews
- Cake stalls
- Wine-tasting events
- Coin collection at events or shopping centres (must seek permission from relevant authorities)
- Personal challenges such as doing a triathlon, cycling trip or trek
- Garage sales – invite neighbours to donate their goods as well for a cause
- Anything that attracts support as either a paying participant or as a donor
Whatever your method of fundraising, we ask you to please be conscious of the reputation of Variety and to remember that it is ‘the children’s charity’, therefore fundraising events must be created and run in a manner appropriate.
All donations $2 or over are tax-deductible
Sponsorship
Next to the children, for whom we all work, the sponsors are our most important group. Whether it is as a car in the SA Variety 4WD Challenge or support for a fundraising event, it is the sponsors to whom Variety looks for assistance. It is the sponsors, therefore, who are really helping the children. Without the backing of sponsors there would not be a Challenge!
Apart from monetary donations, the provision of goods (in the form of show bags, stickers, badges and the like for the entrants to hand out to children along the route) is an effective way to spread your name across the state.
Regular Giving Program
Variety has a regular giving program that people can donate small but regular amounts to. This idea can be linked to your fundraising account and can quickly help boost your coffers if you get enough people committed.
By signing up to Variety’s Regular Giving Program, donations received from organisations and individuals can not only help the car’s fundraising tally but helping kids in need in SA!
From a Variety perspective, for just $8 per month over a year, a regular gift will become another by sending a child in need to the annual Variety Children’s Christmas Party at the Adelaide Showground.
For those of you who have been to one of these, you’ll understand what an inspiring experience it is.

What is tax deductible?
Monies donated to Variety - the children's charity are generally tax deductible under the Income Tax Assessment Act provided they qualify as an unfettered donation; that is, the donor can prove that they have received no value in return for the donation.
What is not?
Sponsors and entrants should accordingly be aware that the following ARE NOT deductible as donations. These costs are met personally by the entrants.
- The $550 entry fee.
- Meal costs.
- Accommodation costs.
- Vehicle purchase, preparation, maintenance and running costs.
- Merchandise purchases.
- Associated travel costs, for example, return airfares and accommodation, vehicle return transport or vehicle recovery costs.
- Ticket sales, including raffle tickets.
- Auction items
These comments are to be taken as guidelines only. Variety is not a tax consultant and therefore assumes no liability for actions taken as a result of these guidelines. In any instances where an entrant or a sponsor is uncertain of the tax implications of their involvement, they should consult their own accountant or tax adviser.
