What is Variety Adventure TV?
Variety Adventure TV is a campaign which raises funds to support Variety’s Freedom program to help children in need gain mobility and independence.
Leading businessman/philanthropist RON BARTON, and television presenter TROY GRAY have teamed up to raise over $200,000 every year for Variety's Freedom Program. In 2011, a dedicated volunteer committee, plus a dozen documentary participants aim to take the total amount raised via this project (over the past five years) to $1 Million!
This unique fundraising project is largely based on an exciting annual television documentary. Each year, in the last week of October, 12 lucky participants get to undertake the adventure of a lifetime. The journey is filmed by our award wining crew and screened on television. Our past TV documentaries have won medals at the annual Cinematography Awards, and have screened internationally.
Every participant needs to raise a minimum of $10,000 for Variety the Children’s Charity, (with some participants raising in excess of $20,000!). We have annual prizes for the highest fundraiser.
The 2011 Adventure took place in the north of South Australia. Filming began in the opal capital of the world, Coober Pedy, the group then making it's way across the semi-desert region of the State's North, ending their 6 day Adventure in the purpose built mining town of Roxby Downs. Every year we strive to ensure the Adventure is even better than the last, so our creative logistics team hit the ground running to ensure they deliver on their commitment of fun, adventure and unforgettable experiences!

Where it began
The first Variety Adventure TV campaign in 2007 featured a Radiothon on FIVEaa which featured again in 2008. The ‘Schools Kickathon’ was an additional activity which linked in with the Crows, the Power and the SANFL’s junior football programs which saw children participating within their schools in a physical exercise to raise money for children in need.
As Variety Adventure TV is a constantly evolving fundraising campaign, new concepts are developed each year to assure not only maximum participation, but to also maintain the fun in the fundraising, a Variety prerequisite!
2008 saw the debut of the first fundraising trek, ‘Highlights of the Heysen’, which not only raised over $130,000 net for children in need, but also aired on Channel Nine in the form of a one hour documentary produced and led by local TV identity, Troy Gray.
Variety Adventure TV’s second fundraising trek took place in October 2009 on South Australia’s idyllic Kangaroo Island with a net result of $227,000 achieved, the most successful Variety Adventure TV campaign to-date.
2011 took us to the Northern parts of our great State where we filmed our “Riches of the outback” adventure, and we raised a staggering $253,000 net for the Variety freedom program.
The series of TV documentaries have won awards, dominated the TV ratings, and have also screened at the movie cinema!
Variety Adventure TV has helped hundreds of children gain mobility, freedom, independence and the chance to join in the life of their community through the provision of wheelchairs, leg splints, standing frames, prosthetics and wheelchair lifter conversions to motor vehicles.
