2010 Variety Children's Christmas Party
The highlight of the year for so many children and volunteers, the Children’s Christmas Party was held on Wednesday 1 December in the Goyder Pavilion, Adelaide Showgrounds.
This year the party grew even bigger, with 1521 children accompanied by 700 carers, making 2221 guests – ably looked after by 150 volunteers. It is quite possibly the largest children’s Christmas party in the state.
The magic filtered slowly into the massive room from the day prior, from the tables being set, the pageant floats being wheeled in and the colourful balloons floating above the tables.
A flood of excited children explored all the delights on offer. It is hard to guess a favourite activity – the face painting and tattooists who had lines of excited children going in, and a line of fairies, butterflies, ghouls and tigers coming out. Then there was the fire engine, which was barely visible beneath the hoards crawling over, under and through it. The Magic Cave bus was also busy all day, and the Liberty Swings brought a glow of joy to every face, as wheelchair-bound kids experience a swing for the first time. Many wishful letters were sent to Santa, posted in an enormous letterbox that surely must be visible from the North Pole! Entertainment was supplied by the Flaming Sambucas and Peter Coombe – the kids and many of the adults knew every word with much dancing done!
The highlight of the day was the guest appearance by Santa, who took time out of his very busy schedule to drop by and wish everyone a Merry Christmas! To cap off an already amazing day, every child received a gift of a very cute stuffed panda and a panda backpack courtesy of Ladies of Variety.
This was a fantastic event on an almost unbelievable scale – our heartfelt thanks go to:
