Students are awarded the The Brian and Moiree Naylor Memorial Educational Scholarship.

Variety - the Children’s Charity each year honours our first patron Brian Naylor and his wife Moiree, who tragically lost their lives in the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires. The four recipients of the 2012 Brian and Moiree Naylor Memorial Educational Scholarships are:

Alexander Franklin, Whittlesea Secondary College

Hannah Davey, Diamond Valley College

Emma Walters, Alexandra Secondary College

Chelsea Quilliam, Yea High School

The Brian and Moiree Naylor Scholarship, provides funding of up to $30,000 annually and is awarded to students from four secondary schools affected by Victoria’s 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. The funds are to be used to further recipients’ education and tertiary studies.

Alexander Franklin and his family were severely impacted by the 2009 Bushfires. The family lost their Kinglake home and all their possessions. In the following 18 months they relocated three times. Alex is the oldest of four in a single parent family and has had to spend a considerable amount of time assisting at home. Despite these obstacles, Alex achieved his VCE and will study engineering at Monash University.

Hannah Davey was directly affected by Black Saturday when her family home at Kinglake was destroyed. After such a devastating event and having to relocate off the mountain, Hannah has managed to continue her studies and completed her Year 12 exams in 2011. Hannah plans to continue her education with a Bachelor of Nursing at La Trobe University in 2012.

Emma Walters and her family lost their Marysville home and all their possessions on Black Saturday. Both her parents lost their jobs and together with the loss of their tight knit community, this had a significant impact on the entire family. Emma has been a student at Alexander Secondary College for 6 years and despite the setbacks has been an active member of the school community. She has been part of the Alice Sloan Memorial Leadership Program, speaking in public forums such as Rotary and business breakfasts to promote the program. In 2012, Emma will study psychological science at Latrobe University.

Chelsea Quilliam and her family lost their Kinglake home and possessions on Black Saturday 2009. The family have struggled to regain anywhere near what they lost. Chelsea completed Year 11 as a foundation VCAL student and then made the difficult transition to complete her Year 12 VCE. Her persistence and dedication to her studies paid off with a successful VCE enter. Chelsea will study Beauty Therapy at Collingwood TAFE.

Brian Naylor was a long term supporter of Variety, always generous with his time and assisting with many activities. In the years he was involved with Variety, he attended many events with his wife Moiree.

To commemorate his life and his service to Variety Victoria, Variety established The Brian & Moiree Naylor Memorial Educational Scholarship dedicated to the couple.

Variety would particularly like to thank Brian and Moiree’s son Clinton Naylor, daughters Jane Bayliss and Trudee Lapthorne, daughter-in-law Diane Naylor and son-in-law Steve Lapthorne for their support in helping us establish this scholarship.
