Beach Boys
The Beach Boys started with a 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air, and a group of enthusiastic Variety supporters from the East Coast of Tasmania, way back in 1993. Although the cars have changed throughout the years (there was a 1968 Kombi affectionally nicknamed “The Other Half”, and then a Holden Jackeroo nicknamed “Another Half”), the aim of the Beach Boys has remained the same – to have fun and raise much needed funds for Tasmanian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.
Craig Rogerson, nicknamed Rogo, joined Cherilyn Branch (AKA Cher) and Jarvo (Michael Jarvis) in 2001 and was joined the following year by Rosco (Ross McPherson). The group are without a doubt veteran Bashers. For Rogo, the TasBash is “A week to keep the phones off, to go away to faraway places, see the sites and have fun – knowing that what you were doing was helping Tasmanian children. It’s all about having fun for a good cause”. The car itself stands out in all its yellow glory. Perched on top is a yellow canoe, which is rumoured to be able to squirt water at other unsuspecting Bashers.
Rogo gives sage advice for new Bashers, “Remember that it’s about the journey – the TasBash takes the longest route possible, travelling the scenic route along forestry roads. There are quicker ways to get to the destination, but that’s not the point!”.
The new look TasBash is easier than ever to join! It’s only 4 days, with the option of joining for 1, 2, 3 or 4 days to suit the modern-day life and work commitments, bring any car you like, just have a team theme, and journey with a group of fun-loving and rather whacky group of people. Rogo encourages them to come along for just a day or 2 along the route, for a teaser.
The Beach Boys loved TasBash to the point where they started a Mini Bash, not to mention the golf days and shed parties, and organise the Variety Race day in November.
Asked about the highlights of the TasBash, Rogo responded, “It’s definitely the visits to the schools. You can see that the funds raised in Tasmania stay in Tasmania”.
One final piece of advice from Rogo, “Bring your sense of humour!”
