The team from Car 1969 all had the same desire and sense of adventure to stop thinking about the Variety Bash and actually do it.
Wayne was always intrigued by the Variety Bash and felt that it was always something that he’d love to do at least once. he’d seen the cars over the years and often thought, as many people do, that it looked like a lot of fun for a good cause.
The idea of a classic car, good friends, seeing this great Country and raising money for charity ticked all the right boxes so they set about making it happen.
Mid 2015, Wayne purchased their magnificent 1969 Kombi and set about readying it for the 2016 Bash. He loved the idea of driving an original Kombi from coast to coast through the outback of Australia.
With next to no horsepower (40 at best) and less than average handling, Car 1969 made the distance and they did it in true Kombi style. Even when many other Bashers had their doubts. There seemed to be many a surprised look some nights when the 69 Kombi rolled in at the end of some tougher stages. The 2016 Bash to Darwin was one of the best experiences they’ve ever had, encompassing great fun, a fantastic journey through the outback and the chance to meet some great people along the way.
The drive, while challenging, was incredibly satisfying. This team met each new day with different problems, surprises, and the anticipation about what each day would have in store for them. The Variety Bash takes you out of your comfort zone immediately, you switch on to the route notes, distances and landmarks, forgetting about work, losing yourself in the challenge and striving to make it to the end of each day with damaging or breaking the car. Wonderful stuff!
Meeting fellow VW enthusiasts in Alice Springs, as well as having long periods without phone service were also a couple of the highlights, giving the crew a feeling of being completely isolated from the chaos and stress of their daily lives.
These guys reckon the Bash is highly addictive. The minute they finished the Variety Vic Bash in 2016, they immediately set about getting ready for the 2017 event.
The crew of Car 1969 are looking forward to some serious fun on the 2017 Variety Vic Bash to Fraser Island.
No mod-cons here...
The Kombi has the original engine – a mighty 1.6 litre – not fast but definitely reliable.
Mixing it up...
Their car theme was based on Surfers in a Kombi in 2016. But in 2017 they are changing to a Jamaican/Rasta theme which will see some dreadlocks and reggae music make an appearance for sure.
