Can we fix it?

Steven had heard about the Variety Bash but didn’t really know what it was all about, so he made a few enquiries. He went to a Bash pub night where we met all these fantastic people, who wanted to raise money for disadvantaged kids and have some fun along the way.

He was told about a 1966 Dodge Phoenix (ex Sesame Street Bash car) that was for sale. It was going cheap, and had only done about 18 bashes, so what could go wrong?!  Elmo gave him a 12-month warranty, and coined it the ‘bargain of a life time’. So the team bought the car, fixed it up, painted it bright red and called themselves the ‘Wobbles’ (a play on the Wiggles) in the Big Red Car. They never had to make a warranty claim from Elmo.

They did two Bashes in the Phoenix, when they came across another 1966 Phoenix for sale, which was in perfect condition. It was an ex American Secret Service car – which was based in Albert Park. So, they bought it, and made one good car out of the two cars – they now have plenty of spare parts.

They used the new car, for the first-time last year for the drive to Darwin, which went well, apart from the fact that it broke down about fifteen times, caught fire twice and the rear suspension broke away from the body.

Despite all this it was an awesome trip and the crew raised over $15,000 for Variety.

Why they chose Variety...

We chose Variety because we all know a family with kids that need help, and sometimes their lives can be short, putting a smile on their faces puts a smile on ours.

Meet the team

The crew of Car 266 this year consists of: Steven McCluney, Jim Papagiannis & Steve Pirovano

Warm and fuzzy feelings...

The team’s favourite parts of the bash are: meeting the kids on the road, and just knowing that we are making a little difference in their lives. Travelling and seeing new places, particularly those places off the beaten track (you never know what’s around the corner) and of course, the cars.
