Stuart Wagstaff AM (13 February, 1925 - 10 March, 2015)

The amazing Stuart Wagstaff AM was well known as one of the world’s finest actors and his history and reputation in the theatre and television is legendary however the story about his involvement with Variety - the children's Charity is equally as exciting.

Stuart Wagstaff AMStuart was one of the original members of Variety Australia when he joined the organisation at the invitation of Paul Hogan’s side kick John Cornell in 1975. Two years later in 1977 he was elected as Chairman taking over from Mr. Hogan. His prime intention was to make the public aware of Variety and its aims through his notoriety as an actor and celebrity. In his first year as Chairman he raised and distributed $250,000 which in those days was a fantastic figure, “I didn’t want to have the money in the bank, I wanted all the money to be put to use for the kids” said Stuart. In those days women were not allowed to be members of Variety but under Stuart’s guidance the late Muffie Watson ran the ladies auxiliary and also started the Children’s Annual Christmas Party which was held at the Canterbury Bankstown RSL Club.

When Stuart’s two years were up the then Dough Guy, Grahame Mapp AM was elected as Chief Barker and Stuart took on the role of regional development and was responsible for setting up regional committees in Victoria, Queensland and West Australia.

Stuart was a recipient of the Variety International Humanitarian Award along with a Variety Lifetime Honorary Membership. In 1998 he was honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to the community, particularly through the Channel 7 Perth Telethon Trust by raising funds for charities that support children. In 2012, Variety Australia placed Stuart on the Variety Australia Honour Roll to acknowledge Stuart’s instrumental and everlasting contributions to Variety – the Children’s Charity throughout Australia.

Stuart's passing leaves his friends at Variety deeply saddened. Stuart will be terribly missed but he will always be remembered as a legend who helped Variety to help thousands of children achieve a better quality of life. Rest in peace Stuart...
