While Kelly was waiting for the NDIS to approve her daughter Goldie’s first wheelchair, she was encouraged to apply for a Variety We Move grant to help cover the cost of modifying the family car.
At the time, Kelly did not know this would be the start of a long relationship between and Variety NSW/ ACT.
Goldie lives with Rett syndrome, and since 2017, Variety has granted pool-heating equipment to support Goldie’s crucial hydrotherapy at home, as well as a Delta Recline All-Terrain buggy allowing Goldie to enjoy the great outdoors and go on camping trips with her family.
Kelly says these Variety grants have not only brought more freedom to Goldie, but also peace of mind to the whole family.
“I’ve been in very dark places and each time Variety has helped me out of it. Variety knows that family time is necessary; that mental health is necessary. They give us hope and remind us that people care.”
“We wouldn’t be here without Variety, it’s just that simple. The red heart means everything to families like ours.”
As Variety celebrates 50 years in Australia, Kelly encouraged everyone to mark the occasion by getting involved and helping to make a difference.
“Volunteer. Help now with any amount… $2… $20. Find a way. Don’t just wait until you are faced with these kinds of challenges, whether directly or indirectly. We’re all a team. We’re all in it together. Variety and our amazing community taught me that.”
