Matthew is a remarkable 9-year-old from Douglas, located southwest of Townsville. Living with Cerebral Palsy and being nonverbal, he communicates through sign language.
Matthew has recently begun competing in para-athletics with a T/F36 classification–which means he can compete standing but has balance and coordination challenges.
Matthew’s mother Jessica reached out to Variety Queensland, hoping for assistance with his registration and uniform fees to attend the 2024 State Championships for athletics. Thanks to our generous sponsors, we were thrilled to grant this support last month.
Matthew also attended the Variety Kids Sports Camp on the Gold Coast supported by his grandparents, where he enjoyed every moment.

“We’ve just heard that there is a para-Little Athletics type group here in Townsville. Matty is hoping to join next year! Also, he’s met another young athlete (T38) up here that attends a local Little Athletics club. We are told they are super supportive and inclusive. Matty is hoping to attend that when he can too!”
