Volunteering FAQs

In Victoria, the majority of our volunteer roles are event-based. We hold a number of Corporate and Kids’ events throughout the year, and we’re always on the lookout for friendly faces to join us and help everything run smoothly. We also require help with tin-rattling at public events from time to time, and on rare occasions we’ll put the call-out for help around the office with everything from warehouse clean-ups, to administration tasks.

We love to have new volunteers join the Variety team, and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get involved. All you need to do is register on our portal by clicking here.

**NB: this portal is different to any other portals we have had previously, so unfortunately any logins you had prior to 2017 will not work. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this.

Variety has a policy (in Victoria) that all volunteers, regardless of the activity in which they are engaged, must hold a valid, Victorian Working With Children Check.

To apply for a Working With Children Check in Victoria, please click here.

**NB: If you already hold an Employee WWC Check, you may use this to volunteer.

A Volunteer Check is free, and you can fill out your application and submit your 100 points of ID online. Passport photos for your application are even subsidised through Australia Post, meaning there is now NO COST to volunteers to obtain the check.

It can take up to 6 weeks for you to receive your card in the mail after you submit your application, so please keep this in mind when applying to volunteer, as it is Variety’s policy that we do not allow volunteers access to events with the application/lodgement receipt.

However, after you lodge your application at Australia Post, you will receive a notification of approval from the Department of Justice (DOJ) via email. (This takes up to two weeks.) In some instances, we will allow you to volunteer with a printed copy of this approval email, in conjunction with Photo ID.

Please email us for further information.

Unfortunately due to policy changes, a VIT Permit is no longer sufficient to use in place of a Working With Children Check with Variety.

Once you’ve applied for a role, when you return to your Portal Homepage, you’ll see the role/s you’ve applied for sitting under the “My Roles” section. Once you’ve pressed “CONFIRM”, you’ll receive an automatic email from the system, confirming your submission. Once the “CONFIRM” button turns green, this means you are confirmed and cannot lose your place at an event.

If a particular shift or role is full, and if there is a waitlist available, you will be presented with the option to join.

Unlike previous methods of registering for volunteer opportunities with Variety, it all comes down to you – the volunteers! All you need to do once you’ve applied for a role is head back to your Portal Homepage and press “CONFIRM” under “My Roles” to secure your spot.

If you don’t confirm your role before the specified cut off date for each event, we’ll have to assume you can’t make it, and your spot may be allocated someone on the waitlist.

So you slept through your alarm and ran out the door without checking your card was in your wallet.
It happens to the best of us.

Luckily, it’s EASY as 1-2-3 to upload a copy of any relevant documentation (eg. your WWC check, drivers licence, first aid, food handling) onto your profile!

Simply click the pencil icon next to your profile picture on your Portal Homepage, then scroll down to the “User Files” section and upload a copy of your WWC check!

We understand that things come up from time to time, that mean you might not be able to fulfil your commitment to volunteer. If you find that you need to withdraw from a role, all you need to do is log in to the volunteer portal and click “Withdraw” on the appropriate role.

If you need to withdraw less than two weeks out from the event, please email us in addition to withdrawing, so we can try to fill your spot.

The system allows you to apply for many different roles within the one event (where there are multiple roles available). However, once you have confirmed a role, you must withdraw from that one first, before you apply for another.

Please ensure you touch base with Alicia, the Volunteering Manager, regarding all manual registration requests. Whether it’s due to problems with the registration form, you don’t have email or you’re not comfortable using the online registration system, we will always do everything in our power to make sure you can volunteer with us!

Event information is sent out within the 2 weeks before an event, and SMS reminders will also be sent the day before an event to remind you to bring your Working With Children Check with you on the day.

Rest assured we will not spam your email or phone with notifications, but we always want to make sure we help you make the most of your volunteer experience with up-to-date information and helpful tips.
